Synopsis: How can you have a programme about food from around the world without setting a foot outside your own capital city? Fuji Television has devised a format that gives you the chance to look at international cuisine, in its own setting, without creating a carbon footprint. The idea is breathtakingly simple ? go to the embassies based in your capital city and ask the Ambassador to introduce their cuisine!
At Fuji we have been given access to the private dining rooms of many of the Ambassadors based in Tokyo ranging from Mexico to Luxemburg. We ask the Ambassador or their partner to prepare a favourite meal, typical of their country's cuisine. Our reporter joins them in the kitchen and learns how to make the meal, asks questions about ingredients, traditions and habits in a very relaxed and natural way.
In each venue we encourage an informal atmosphere, allowing for the human side of the Embassy to be presented. We ask to follow the Ambassador or their partner while they pursue their hobbies ? giving a more three dimensional introduction to figures who are usually considered to be inhabiting a different world.
Finally we taste the meal, inviting other family members or other members of the Embassy to the top table, chatting in a way that allows the viewer an insight into another country's culture.
This format is one based on respect and interest in other cultures and cuisines. It gives the viewer the unique opportunity to see around some of the finest buildings in their capital, to see the magnificent art that is so often present inside and to sample the best of each country's cuisines. For the broadcaster it is a unique format that presents many sponsorship opportunities and while it takes the viewer visually to other countries, it does not take film crews there, keeping production costs reasonable ? a win-win situation for broadcaster and viewer alike. And it is of course all done in HD!
