Synopsis:
Passionate, traditional and full of energy..."Sanja Matsuri" is one of Tokyo's largest festivals dating back to the year 1312. It takes place over a period of three days every year downtown in the neighborhood of Asakusa, in celebration of the Asakusa Shrine. Over two million people are drawn into the streets as men and women dressed in traditional festival clothing carry the mikoshi (portable shrine) on their shoulders and head towards Asakusa Shrine. The esquisite lacquer-coated mikoshi can weigh up to a ton and the slightest carelessness can easily lead to injury. This documentary features two women who have devoted their lives to being part of the"Sanja Matsuri.""I was meant to be part of this festival the moment I was born" says 50-year-old housewife, Yasue Sasaki. She met her husband 25 years ago at the festival and now is the mother of two children who have also grown into Sanja fanatics. 32-year-old Yuki Jyoki was expecting her second child just before the festival. Her doctor was strongly opposed to her participation, but no matter what, she was determined to join in.Through the passion of these two women and their family bonds, discover the fascination of one of Japan's most prominent festivals.
