Title: The Dream of a Young Geisha No. of Ep: 1 Duration: 45 min Genre: Japanese Culture/Documentary Synopsis: A 60-minunte documentary of the behind-the-scenes in the life of young apprentice geisha known as Maiko who live in Kyoto. The cameras follow them as they talk about their dreams and aspirations for the future. During their apprenticeship as traditional entertainers, maiko are schooled in such arts as classical dance and the playing of traditional drums. Until they attain full geisha status, maiko maintain a distinctive hairstyle and dress for entertaining and wear round clogs (pokkuri) when outdoors. Traditionally apprenticeship is from 13 to 18 years old, but today, the age of those that enter the profession has become increasingly higher.
